Obstetrics is the management and care of a woman before and during pregnancy, labour and delivery (childbirth), and postpartum. It usually goes hand-in-hand with Gynaecology which is the care of a woman’s reproductive organs.
Services that fall under the care of obstetrics include:
Prepregnancy care
Also known as preconception care, involves a series of steps and assessments to ensure that you are well-prepared for pregnancy and that you and your future baby can experience optimal health.
Pregnancy is when one or more foetuses develop in a woman’s uterus (womb). An average pregnancy lasts approximately 40 weeks or 280 days. Care during pregnancy involves caring for the well-being of both the mother and the baby. This may involve various prenatal tests (OSCAR, NIPT) and monitoring the mother for conditions such as gestational diabetes, high blood pressure (preeclampsia), and urine leakage.
Labour and delivery involves guiding a pregnant woman through the four stages of labour (active phase, latent phase, 2nd stage, and 3rd stage) and ensuring a smooth delivery. Delivery can occur in various ways, such as natural delivery, caesarean section (c-sect), and assisted delivery.
